How to install FFmpeg?

FFmpeg is a widely known open source and free tool for processing multimedia content such as audio, video, and other streaming formats. It is widely used for various tasks such as conversion of media files.

Installing FFmpeg can be challenging for beginners due to the confusing download links. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step approach to help new users install FFmpeg effortlessly.

WINDOWS USERS

Download this file: https://www.gyan.dev/ffmpeg/builds/ffmpeg-git-full.7z

(Note that this link is officially mentioned in FFmpeg download links)

Extract the 7zip file, rename the extracted folder as "ffmpeg"
Copy the folder to a suitable location, such as the C:/ drive or any other preferred directory
Open that folder and copy the bin folder path where the ffmpeg.exe file is present
Set the path in the environment variable in windows:

MAC USERS

Download the latest version of FFmpeg from these links, selecting the appropriate version based on your CPU type:

Apple Silicon (ARM64) : OSXExperts.net

Intel (x64) : evermeet.cx/ffmpeg

If you are using safari browser, then the zip file will get extracted automatically, if not then extract the zip file manually. You just have to get the ffmpeg file.
Double click on the executable, it will show a permission error. (Don't delete the file)
Now go to your System settings > Privacy & Security section.
Scroll down, you will find a message saying "ffmpeg was blocked...", simply Allow it by clicking "Open Anyway"

Go back and copy the full folder path of that ffmpeg file, for example let's say it is, /Users/test/Local
Open your Terminal, edit the .zshrc file using this command:

nano ~/.zshrc

Add the following line to the file:

export PATH=$PATH:/Users/test/Local

(Here the path “/Users/test/Local” is our ffmpeg folder path that we recently copied, so change accordingly)

Save the file and exit the editor (in nano, press CTRL+O, then CTRL+X).
Apply the changes by running:

source ~/.zshrc

LINUX USERS

Open your terminal and simply type this command:

sudo apt install ffmpeg

(This is for Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint)

Once this is done, you can test the FFmpeg package by typing a command in your terminal/cmd:

ffmpeg -version

If the command outputs the version information correctly, then FFmpeg has been successfully installed and is ready for use.
